Our newest client came in for a hair makeover this week. She was very soft spoken but knew exactly what she wanted. Out came the smart phone with one-of-many viral photos of the perfect Jennifer Aniston hair.
After some back and forth discussion, and a few mixes of color, I gave her the golden honey-colored “Jennifer hair”, and beautifully conditioned strands, she was dreaming of.
She really did look amazing. And, we could all understand why it was so important for her to leave quickly for her dinner date. She was looking forward to that “WOW moment” when her partner and friends would rave about her glamorous new look.
As she was about to leave, she said, I never ever do this but I would love to give you a very special review on Google and Yelp. That would be so sweet of you, we gushed. As we said our goodbyes and she made her next appointment, she said she couldn’t wait to get online to write about us.
The day of her next appointment came within five weeks, almost to the exact hour of her last visit. She gave me a huge hug and sat down in my chair. The first thing she said was, I feel just awful and I need to apologize! I couldn’t imagine what on earth she was talking about.
Suddenly, I remembered our last conversation and I knew what she was about to say. She didn’t get the chance to write her reviews. Just like so many of our most loyal and delighted customers who have the intention to submit a Yelp review, she admitted that she just didn’t do it!
The truth is, most people don’t understand how small businesses like ours live and die by online referrals. When my mom started as a stylist, word of mouth referrals were the secret sauce to building her loyal and happy customer base. My mom laughs as she tells me about the way things used to be before today’s always-online culture.
Yelp and Google+ are the most popular referral sites and they’ve replaced word of mouth marketing—almost overnight! It’s a mind-blowing fact that 88% of consumers trust online customers reviews just as much as personal recommendations. My mom tells me she can’t believe it, as she shakes her head and rolls her eyes—she’s my wonderful momma but a bit old school!
When we did some digging online, we were surprised to find out that every kind of review is important—even some neutral or negative ones need to show up once in awhile! This proves to Google and Yelp that the reviews are honest and not coerced in any way. This is just as we would want!
